When our children were little, cleaning their rooms seemed like a momentous task. We taught them to look at one item at a time and decide where it should go. By taking the focus off the entire mess, to one thing at a time, we worked with them until they were able to clean their rooms without feeling overwhelmed.
With so much wrong in our world, our generation is facing pressures like never before. Yet it doesn’t change Jesus’ admonition to us… “Seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things (clothes, food, practical needs) shall be added to you. Therefore, take no anxious worry for tomorrow: for tomorrow shall have its own concerns. Sufficient to each day is its own evil” (Matthew 6:33,34).
My grandfather took me aside one day, held my hands in his, and said, “I spent many years of my life worrying about things that never came to pass. Don’t do the same. Trust the tomorrows to Him.” I’ve never forgotten those wise words.
The Lord encourages us to “redeem the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16). Rather than worrying about tomorrow, or being bitter about our trials, how can we make today sweeter with Christ’s love? How can we brighten the hearts around us with words and actions that flow from His kindness, goodness, and truth? This we can do – one issue at a time, one hour at a time, one day at a time.
We have today. Transform it with His glory.
