Not A Laughing Matter

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Lot and his family had decided to make their home in Sodom. Like many other well-intending Believers, they thought the sin of the city wouldn’t touch them; that they could live above it, but the account we read of their angelic deliverance from this city, (known for its homosexuality and violence), reveals the sin had indeed had an affect on them…

“Two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city…” He bid them to come and stay at his house, and he made them a meal. “Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the two men that came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” Lot went out and begged them “not to do this wicked thing.”

Lot knew rape was evil, but he makes them an offer…”Look, I have two daughters that have never been with a man. Let me bring them out to you and you can do what you like to them. But don’t do anything to these men for they have come under the protection of my roof.” It’s worth mentioning that both of his daughters were also under the “protection of his roof,” but he caved to the pressure around him. The pervasive sin he lived in had corrupted him.

He was willing to let his daughters be gang raped, but God didn’t allow it. The men outside raged! They didn’t want women, they wanted men. They began to break the door down, but the angels blinded the men. The angels inquired, “What other family do you have here? We need to get them out of here because we are going to destroy this place! The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”

Lot went and spoke to his two daughter’s fiancés. He urged them, “Hurry and get out of here! The Lord is going to destroy the city!” But the men thought he was joking and laughed in disbelief. With the coming of the next morning, the angels grabbed them by the hands and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. One of the angels said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” But as they fled, Lot’s wife looked back, and became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19)

Friends, we are watching a revived Sodom all around us. The same God that judged them will judge again. We are foolish to think they can be reasoned with, or bribed, as Lot tried. They are fully given over to their sin and judgment is coming. Others can laugh this warning off, but they will not be shown mercy. Some may leave the sin (but against their will), and longingly look back, but they, too, will be destroyed.

Look to Jesus for deliverance. He is the only way to salvation.
