Sociologists have documented marked characteristics of each generation. Some were marked by creativity, artistry, and inventions, while others were marked by courage, boldness, and bravery. Our generation is known for rapidly advancing technological industries, and an abundance of information and communication. And with that information overload, psychologists have noticed a mass movement toward emotional detachment.
Perhaps the human mind was never intended to know of all the sin and misery worldwide or think it’s strong enough to carry the weight of it. Maybe we have been lured into a system that sabotages our peace by stripping our minds of the precious things of God while taking a firehose of negative news to the space that was once hollowed out for His presence.
It was stated this week by a top nutritionist that society has never been so overfed but undernourished. Our food lacks life-giving value. Our information overload is no different - minds are stuffed full of nothing that really matters in eternity, and people are, “ever learning, but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth” - 2 Timothy 3:7.
Worse yet, there’s a great displacement that has taken place (almost without mention). Jesus, the Author of all Truth, has been replaced by trendy new authors, or a Google search. And parental wisdom and authority has also been replaced by the all-knowing internet. These problems have resulted in an arrogant society that disrespects their parents and feels no need for an outdated God. Scripture told us there would be a time when we would see a generation that “claims to be wise (superior) but instead became fools” - Romans 1:22.
Friends, the answer to our societal problems doesn’t lie in anything, but God. We need more of Him in everything! In our laws, our governments, our schools, our books, our conversations, our families, our news, our relationships, our hearts, and our minds. Until the Prince of Peace is given His rightful throne in our societies, there will be no peace. And even if the whole world should continue down this destructive path, may we be found of Him when He comes “full of faith and abounding in good works.” It’s a daily choice. We need more, more and more of Him.
