“Yea, the stork in the sky knows her appointed times; and the turtledove and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their migration…” (Jeremiah 8:7).
With Fall upon us again, the northern birds are preparing to go south. They feast on berries for the journey and stick together in droves until its time to go. God has put within the hearts of many animals that migratory sense calling them towards home. And He’s done the same for us… “He has set eternity in their hearts, so that no one can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
In other words, we have a “sense” that there is more than this life, yet we have to look to God’s own revelation of that plan, through His Word, to find it. But once we “see” all God has in store for us in Christ, our hearts are never the same. We long for Home.
This truth was just discovered in the Bar-Headed Geese which migrate over the Himalayas, the tallest mountains in the world, twice a year. Not only did God design them to fly in low-oxygen conditions, but researchers, using cameras and tiny backpacks which record vital signs, have realized something else… the birds need to “see” home. As they climb in altitude, the birds position themselves to get glimpses of their “home” in the valley beyond the mountain range. As they do, fresh spurts of adrenalin are released, helping them to make it over the mountains and strengthening them to overcome the adverse winds.
“Set your mind/affections on things Above” the Lord encourages us, stick together, encourage one another daily, eat well, keep your eyes on Home, gird up, and live ready to leave.
It’s almost time.
