Mightier

“The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voices; the floods lift up their waves! The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. Thy testimonies are very sure…” (Psalm 93:3,4).

The floods in this Psalm are not literal waves of the sea, but the enemy that threatens to overtake us. To say “they have lifted up their voices” is to read God’s take of our daily news. But God’s Word is mightier than their boasting… “Your testimonies are very sure.”

Mary rejoiced that despite Roman rule over Israel, despite the wicked Edomite, king Herod, being on the throne, the promises of God came true… “For He that is Mighty has done to Me great things, and holy is His name… He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy, as HE SPOKE to our fathers, to Abraham, and to His seed for ever.” (Luke 1:49,55).

Just as God has decreed boundaries for the sea… “Only up to this boundary shall you come, but no further: here shall your proud waves be stopped” (Job 38:11), He has boundaries for evil. He displayed this Sovereign-power to the disciples more than once as they crossed the sea… “WHEN there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves, THEN He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” (Matthew 8:24-26).

Jesus told us to watch for the “sea and waves roaring” globally while Israel is sieged. Here we are. But notice His next words, “WHEN these things BEGIN to come to pass, THEN look up, and lift up your heads, for your redemption draws near” (Luke 21:28).

Our “Mighty God” is also “The Mighty One of Israel.” And the world shall know it.
