Made For So Much More

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

We are often told that we were made for great things - so keep our vision big, our hopes and ideals high, and trust God to help us achieve more than we could ever dream of. This is all true and good, but let’s talk a bit about what we’re not made for…

We were never meant to walk this life alone, in our own wisdom. It’s far too complex to walk it without God’s help. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” (Proverbs3:5,6)

We were never meant to live without His love. To hope that “self-love” is enough, is to set yourself up for failure. “For the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us” (Romans 5:5). But one of the signs of the end times is that many will reject His love and will be “lovers of self rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:2). It’s a recipe for depression. We NEED His love and care so deeply.

We were never meant to live without His peace. He told us that He would leave us with His peace because He knew this world’s chaos would be distressing. “My peace I leave with you; My peace I give you, not as the world gives. Let not your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

We were never meant to live without His Hope and promises…  “Hope deferred makes the heart sick,” rings so true today (Proverbs 13:12).  This word “deferred” means to “drag out for an extended period of time.” Oh, how our hearts need Hope! The greatest Hope we can have is the assurance that no matter what evil envelopes our world, God still has plans that are good for us, and nothing will change that…  “I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you Hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

And ultimately, we were never meant to live without Him. The deepest cry of God’s heart is that we will be together with Him forever, where “He will show us the exceeding riches of His glories for the ages to come.” What a beautiful thought! We were meant to be with Him forever.
