Looking Back

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

Those who have read the story of Jacob in the Bible know he didn’t have an easy life. Jacob described his life to Pharaoh as “few and evil.” But as Jacob blessed his sons before he went to be with the Lord, he testified of the Lord’s faithfulness through his life as, “The God who fed me all my life long to this day,” and the One who “redeemed me from all evil” (Genesis 48:15,16).

The Apostle Paul was one of the most attacked missionaries of the New Testament Church. His journeys are described in the book of Acts and his letters describe his sufferings and persecutions. Yet in his farewell letter he wrote how the Lord stood with him and strengthened him during his trials, concluding… “And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me to His heavenly Kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:17,18).

We can trace the love of God from eternity past where He planned our creation, to the Cross where He provided our redemption - from sin and death into righteousness and eternal life - to the ages yet to come where He will shower us with the "exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus."

Even a quick perusal of looking back over our lives reveals His hand of guidance in perfectly timed blessings and help; people He placed in our lives as tokens of His love; bountiful provisions; His upholding strength and grace in time of need - all of them bearing witness to His daily loving care and presence with us.

May thankfulness for “so great salvation” in Christ be the mark of our lives, not just at the end of our days, but at the end of each day. HIs promise is true, "Lo, I am with you always."
