When Jesus was invited to the wedding in Cana and they ran out of wine, Mary took their desperate need to Jesus. After talking with Him, she said to the servants, “Whatsoever He says to you, do it” (John 2:5). There is no better advice.
If we would experience the wonders of all that Jesus wants to do in our lives, obedience is the key. When Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the waterpots with water,” they didn’t just fill them half or three-quarters full, but “to the brim.” That’s wholehearted obedience.
Then Jesus said, “Draw some out now, and carry it to the governor (Master of Ceremonies) of the feast.” And they did. When he had tasted it, exclaimed over its excellence, yet wondered where such good wine could have come from, the Bible tells us, “But the servants who drew the water knew.”
These obedient servers had the inside scoop on the power of Jesus. Imagine their awe and joy when the governor raised his wine glass for the blessing over the evening meal… “Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine…” Thrilling! They knew the Creator of the fruit of the vine was standing in their midst, clothed in flesh, ready to turn their ordinary lives into fulness of joy.
Our joy in Jesus doesn’t depend on whether our leaders are good, our jobs are going great, or our health is good. It depends on one thing… “faith which is energized by love” (Galatians 5:6). The disobedient will never experience the wonders of answered prayer like Mary, miraculous provision like those who invited Jesus to their wedding, and the inside scoop on what Jesus is up to like the servants.
“Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it” (Luke 11:28).
