Knowing The Difference

The Bible says there are two things mistaken for true spirituality: emotionalism and sensualism. In 2 Timothy 3, we are given a list of 18 traits of godless behavior in the last days, all springing from the idolatry of “love of self.” But notice number 19, the last trait… “having a FORM OF GODLINESS, but denying the power of true godliness: from such turn away” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

This “form” of godliness is the Greek word “morphosis,” an outward appearance only. It is emotional and false. There is no power of the Holy Spirit, no interest in the authority of the Word of God, no true relationship with God. This is the result of religion without repentance.

Another Scripture calls for Believers to “earnestly contend for the faith, once-for-all delivered to the saints because… certain people have crept in (to the churches) turning the grace of God into license to sin… they are sensual, not having the Spirit” (Jude 1:3,18). Much of today’s “Christian” music and popular preachers fit this description. The lyrics and messages are occupied with “self” and failure, rather than Christ and victory.

How can we discern what is “spiritual” and what isn’t? Jesus said the Holy Spirit’s work is to convict the world of sin, their need for righteousness, and the reality of coming Judgment (John 16:8). He will call them to repentance and faith in Christ for the answer to all three – through genuinely saved people. Then, true repentance results in “metamorphosis” – an inward transformation of heart, resulting in a new nature of righteousness, evidenced by true godliness.

Emotionalism and sensuality are satanically impoverished counterfeits for true spirituality. Nothing compares to a personal relationship with Christ. May we avoid what God won’t bless, and rescue others while there is time.
