Knowing Not How

“So is the Kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how. For the earth brings forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately He puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come” (Mark 4:26-29)

While you and I sleep and rise in the cycle and seeming monotony of daily life, the growth of the Kingdom of God is taking place under the watchful eye of the Harvester. The Bible reminds us the unseen work of growth is the Lord’s: “As you do not know what the way of the Spirit is, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so you do not know the works of God who makes all. In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand: for you do not know which shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both alike shall be good” (Ecclesiastes 11:5,6). Our job is to sow the Seed of the Gospel of Christ and to water, but God alone that gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:7). Keep sowing.

And isn’t it wonderful to know, that the preaching of the Cross, considered such foolishness by the world, is actually the greatest work upon earth… “The Kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard seed (medicinal herb), which, when it is sown in the earth, is less (in size and importance) than all the seeds that are in the earth. But when it is sown, it grows up, and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out great branches, so that the fowls of the air may lodge under its shadow” (Mark 4:31,32).

So today, ignore the wind and clouds of adversity, and sow your grain of the Gospel, or water where you can. What we do know is that our labor is never in vain in the Lord. We don’t need to know how He works. Just sow, sleep, rise, and do it again, until Jesus returns.

He will give the increase.
