Just Him

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Sometimes the questions of life overpower us. Our modern struggles are no different than the anguish experienced by Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, or by David, that repeatedly asked God, “Why?” Or Elijah and Moses that both despaired of life itself. This earthly existence is one trial after another, while our hearts struggle to keep our equilibrium while the winds of evil and conflict blow hard.

Questions, like voices ricocheting through dark valley walls, keep calling out…  “Lord, are you near? How much longer? Where is our deliverance? Please God, help the Israeli people? Why is evil allowed to prosper and righteousness suffer so? What kind of a world will our children be left with? Please God, protect the children; protect the babies…  the unborn, as Satan is seeking to destroy them. Help us God to keep our joy, our peace…”  But then a hand slips into ours… and He speaks…  “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be discouraged for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Oh the power of getting alone with Him and hearing His words! No one else; no news in the background, no phone in hand… Just Him. We will find that in His presence we don’t need to know all the answers of life, or His next move, or His agenda. We find all we’re seeking for at His feet like Mary, who just took time to love Him.

There’s great freedom in pushing all the questions aside and just dwelling in His presence; wrapped in the blanket of His promises, and in the warmth of His never-ending love. This is worship, unfettered by the nagging inquiries that only He knows.

Friends, draw near to Him - His heart - His trustworthiness, and His unfailing love. He has all the answers, and His plans are unfolding on time. He will show us all we need to know. Rest in Him. Exhale, and breathe in His goodness. All we need is Him. Just Him.
