In The Light Of Eternity...

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

We all have a God-given intuitiveness that tells us that life does not end at the grave. We know this to be completely true, as “He has placed eternity in our hearts” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). But we wrestle with the world’s lens that we unknowingly put on. We deify the day, the project, the house, our fitness, our goals… our lives, and wonder why it doesn’t satisfy. One big change that has transpired over the last 150 years, is that Christians of old lived for eternity. They talked about the glories that await, and the joy of seeing Christ face to face. Their temporal aches and pains were weighed in the light of a new glorified body that is awaiting them, and they lived boldly in spite of illness or disability. Many sermons were preached on heaven and hell, because they knew that both are eternal destinies. Sadly, it’s hard to find very many churches that will even talk about this truth anymore. It’s more desired to talk about living our best life now. We’ve lost perspective. Our focus changes everything! We will find glory in self, or glory in God. Scripture urges us to “Set our minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). It goes as far to encourage us to see beyond the veil, into the spiritual realm, where the Heavenly grandstand is filled with witnesses who have gone on before us. They cheer us on as we struggle Heavenward here below (Hebrews 12:1-2). They remind us that it’s “what’s done for Christ that will last.” Dear ones, the temporal world situation isn’t to be our main focus: it’s passing away like sand in a time glass. We must continue to pray, contend, and be salt and light here, but with our focus being fixed on Christ, on eternity, on bringing as many people to Heaven with us, and on His Kingdom that is to come. If we live in the light of eternity, we will be people of great Hope and great Joy. and the weight of this broken world won’t be able to hold us down. Keep looking up.
