A young man named David, only 22-years-old, stood confidently before a hate-spewing 9.5-foot Philistine warrior named Goliath. David called out to Goliath: “You come to me with a sword, spear, and shield: but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Hosts!” David defeated him with a mere sling stone that day (1 Samuel 17).
Years later, another godly king of Israel, named Asa, was surprised by an attack of a million-man army. Asa prayed to the Lord… “Lord, it is nothing with You to help, whether with many, or with those that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we lean on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude.” Asa won that day (2 Chronicles 14).
What does “in Your name” really mean? It’s a family term for those loving Christ. This is what the Cross was all about. Jesus came to redeem out of every nation a people to bear His name… “To as many as receive Him, to them He gives the authority to become the children of God, even to those who believe on His name” (John 1:12).
Thousands of God’s people have hazarded their lives to carry Christ’s name to the nations. And when all the earth has heard, a guaranteed final victory awaits our Royal Family. The giants and enemy armies of our day have NOT accounted for the Family of God who, “in every place, call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.”
We are watching hostile forces gather, flex their muscles, and breathe out arrogant threats. But as we stand to face them, may they hear us boldly say … “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God!”
