Imitators Of God

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

When we think of what it means to be image bearers of God, we often feel like it’s impossible for a mere human, who struggles against their flesh, to reflect God in a meaningful way. How can one so prone to falter imitate the Holy and Perfect One? But yet, we are called His ambassadors - His representatives here on earth, and through His spirit, we are empowered to show Christ to a world that needs to see a different way.

His love for us when we were at enmity with Him and unlovable, has changed the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). When we love others as valuable creations of God, whose souls are precious to Him, we are His image bearers.

He gave of Himself when others could give Him nothing in return. He healed the lame, the lepers, the blind, and the broken-hearted, knowing they had nothing to give in return, but gratitude. It was enough for Him that they would know of His love and power to save. How opposite in a world that demands to know “what’s in it for me?” When we realize that nothing is ours, but God’s, we can give freely seeking nothing in return but to honor Him. It is in this mindset that we look less like the dull earthen vessels we are, and more like His image.

In forgiving us of our sins (that had a death sentence penalty), and taking our penalty upon Himself, He showed us what sacrificial love looks like. Likewise, every act of selfless love we do has fruit. The light of God shines through us illuminating someone’s darkness.

May our character reflect the heart of God to a world that is desperate to see a glimpse of Him and His goodness. What a privilege to be counted worthy to be His image bearers!
