I Will Lift Up My Eyes

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

Three times a year the Israelites were to keep the Feasts in Jerusalem. Psalms 120-135 were songs written for them to sing on their journey to meet with the Lord. Can you imagine thousands walking, singing, and looking up to see how much closer they were? … “I will lift up my eyes unto the hills, from where my help comes. My help comes from The Lord who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1).

The word for “hills” is really “mountains.” Because we live on this side of the Cross, we can look back on these songs and know that Jesus, who made heaven and earth, walked upon these mountains to help us.

On the mountains of Galilee, He gave us the sermon on building our lives on His Word for safety from life’s storms.  On another mountain, He showed us His power to transform a demoniac’s life, and on another showed us His glory to come. On the Mount of Olives, He prayed for us. Across the valley, on Mt. Calvary, He died for us, paying our debt for sin, and arose in victory. Forty days later, as He ascended to Heaven from the Mount of Olives, He promised to return.

Because Jesus walked those mountains, the remaining promises of Psalm 121 belong to all who look to Him for safety in our journey through this life… “He will not allow your foot to be moved: He that keeps (guards) you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps (guards) Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your Keeper (Guardian)…

The Lord is your shade upon your right hand. The sun shall not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve (guard) you from all evil: He shall preserve (guard) your soul. The Lord shall preserve (guard) your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Keep a song of praise in your heart and keep looking up.
