“The Israelites said to Samuel, ‘You are old and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have’… this displeased Samuel so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king.’” (1 Samuel 8:5-7)
As Jesus entered humanity, He took off His Heavenly robe, and clothed Himself in human flesh. By doing so, He flew under the radar of so many’s expectations. They felt they wanted, even needed, a mighty king (not a baby, or a gentle Healer) that would overthrow Rome. Many believed He would be militarily minded - conquering their oppressor and freeing their people, once and for all.
But, He came much like many precious gems come, shrouded in rough, colorless, human clay. How could ALL strength and might be wrapped in this Infant? How can the One who uttered creation into being now cry? Would God the Father really allow the Savior of humanity to be cloaked in the vulnerability of infancy with murderous madmen in charge of their country? It’s all miraculous!
“Though He (Jesus) was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but MADE HIMSELF NOTHING, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God has highly exalted Him and given Him a Name that is above every name.” (Philippians 2:5-11)
The wisemen KNEW He was King… “Where is He that is born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” For this very title, He willingly died for you and me… Pilate said, ‘Are you King of the Jews?’ Jesus responded, ‘You have said so correctly.’” (Luke 23:3)
Dear friends, may this season bring us to our knees in worship of our humble King. He is worthy of all praise.
“Oh, Come let us adore Him!
Christ, the Lord.”
