Psalm 60 is a Psalm of David, with a great emphasis on wickedness pursuing the innocent and plotting evil against him. “Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked; their tongues are like swords, and their bitter words like arrows. They ambush the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear. They stay focused on their evil purposes; they secretly lay snares, and search out injustice. They boast that they have accomplished their goals.” (vs 1-6)
All evil, whether in David’s day or ours, is still the same-from the author of evil. Its tactics and cruelness are recognizable from afar. First, they create lies, using their tongues as their weapon of choice. From the lies, dialogue is fabricated and spread, and now the weaponry is multiplied. This rapid growth of the lie emboldens the enemy to continue fearlessly. Drunk on their own power, they lay snares to trap the innocent in a word or phrase taken out of context, and the injustice that they couldn’t find (so they created it), falls into place. They laugh and boast of their successful strategies, but they forgot one thing… that God sees all of these lies and He vows to respond.
“But God shoots His arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. They are brought to ruins with their own tongues turned against them. Then all mankind fears God and tells of what He has brought about. They ponder what great things He has done. Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in Him. Let all the upright in heart exult!” (vs 7-10)
May we find refuge in The One who sees all, and is perfectly Just. Evil may seem to be winning now, but it’s only for a season. A day is coming when all darkness will be brought into the light, and all evil laid bare before Him. May we find refuge beneath His wings, and trust Him wholly as we wait.
