King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem were surround by the Assyrian army. They were in great fear. They knew what tortures this army had inflicted on others. But God was on their side. Hezekiah went to the Lord in prayer and the Lord delivered them overnight – no battle, no warfare, nothing. Assyria encamped around Jerusalem only to learn “The Angel of the Lord encamps round about those that fear Him and delivers them” – (Psalm 34:7).
A great truth unfolds In Psalm 53 and Psalm 14. They are identical-twin Psalms except for one verse. Psalm 53 addresses God’s people under siege: “They were in great fear where no fear was: for God has scattered the bones of him that encamps against you.” But Psalm 14 addresses the wicked: “They were in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.” Suddenly the tables turn. The godly find they were safe in Christ all along, but the arrogant besieger suddenly realizes Jesus is very much alive - the Righteous Defender of His flock.
Jesus constantly tells us to “Fear not” because He has the power to say it. Fear is natural, faith is supernatural, and faith is the only way to combat fear… “Fear not, even the very hairs of your head are numbered” is a staggering reality of how dearly we are cherished. “Fear not, there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed” reveals His inescapable omniscience over those plotting against us. “Fear not, it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom” transcends all the best-laid schemes of the globalists.
Jesus assures us in Revelation: “Fear not, I am the First and the Last” that we might have great faith over those who want us in great fear… until the tables turn.
