Grafted Together

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

Grafting is an amazing science. It has been done for thousands of years to strengthen, preserve, eradicate diseases, and even to add flavor and beauty. When it comes to trees, Syracuse University developed “chip grafting” in 2015, creating trees that bear up to forty different varieties of fruits.

Grafting is the great truth of salvation… “For if we have been planted-together (grafted) in the likeness of His death, we shall be also (grafted) in the likeness of His resurrection” (Romans 6:5).

These are spiritual realities, not poetic language. Notice these connected words from Ephesians that are all one word in the Greek… “we have been made-alive-together-with Christ, and has raised-us-up-together, and made us sit-together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:5,6).

In Christ, we are also joined as one Body to all other Believers… “Now you are fellow-citizens with the saints and belonging to the household of God, being built-up on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Chief Cornerstone, in whom all the building fitted-together grows into a holy Temple in the Lord; in whom you all also are being-built-together for a habitation of God through the Spirit… joint-heirs, and a joint-body, and joint-partakers of His promise in Christ through the Gospel” (Ephesians 2 and 3).

Now Jesus’ righteousness flows into us by His Spirit, producing all kinds of “fruits of righteousness” we would never have been able to produce on our own… “Being-filled with fruits of righteousness, which are produced by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:11).

May these powerful truths strengthen, comfort, and encourage your heart each day… “Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you, will-complete-it-perfectly until the Day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).
