Give Thanks

A decree forbidding prayer, on the pains of death, had been crafted to target Daniel… “But when Daniel knew the writing was signed, he went into his house, his windows being open toward Jerusalem, and knelt upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and GAVE THANKS before God, as He always did before” (Daniel 6:10). What glorious defiance in the face of the lions’ den.

Jesus sat with His disciples at the last Passover meal. It was the night of His betrayal. Yet, He leaned forward, “took the cup and GAVE THANKS.” He knew the Cross awaited. But He defied the darkness with these words… “I will not drink henceforth of the fruit of the vine, UNTIL that day I drink it new with you in My Father’s Kingdom.” He would triumph over death and lead all who trust Him into everlasting life.

Daniel was “resurrected” from the lion’s den by the same power of Christ that conquered death and the devil. Perhaps we don’t think of “thanksgiving” as an act of defiance against an evil world, but we should. It defies every power threatening to undo us and stirring discontent, because we look to God as our Source of blessing, not man.

After 11 chapters of marvelous salvation truths in Romans, the next chapter urges us, “Therefore, dear family, because of the mercies of God, present your bodies a living sacrifice (thank-offering), holy, acceptable to God, which is your most intelligent service. And do not be conformed to this world (2 Timothy 2:2-4) but continue being transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove (put on display for all to see) what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.”

Happy Thanksgiving. May your day be filled with His praises.
