Forgiven & Free

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

History is filled with proof that God only allows the wickedness of humanity to go so far. The Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, Egypt, ancient Nineveh, ancient Babylon, and Israel’s removal, dispersal, and return, are all present witnesses to God’s wrath against sin. But the Bible warns of a final ‘wrath to come’… “The heavens and earth are reserved for fire against the day of judgment and condemnation of ungodly men” (2 Peter 3:6,7).

The Cross of Christ is God’s marvelous ‘way of escape’ for everyone… “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel (Good News) of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes… for in it is the righteousness of God revealed… for the wrath of God is/has been revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness...” (Romans 1:16-18).

God is “right” to judge sin. But He is exalted in “righteousness” by forgiving it in sacrificial love… “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven (lifted!), whose sin is covered (by the blood of Christ). Blessed is the one to whom the Lord will not impute iniquity (guilt) to his account, and in whose spirit there is no deceit (secret sins).”

God lifts our guilt from us when we confess it… “I acknowledged my sins to You, and my iniquity I did not hide. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and You forgave (lifted!) the iniquity of my sin” (Psalm 32:5).

The account of the “forgiven” is not left blank. The very righteousness of Christ is “imputed,” making the exchange offered at the Cross complete. And the glorious result? … “Being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9). Now, eternal glory awaits.

What a wonderful Savior!
