Expectant Waiting

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

Waiting is a strange word with so many different nuances. If we say we are waiting for the beautiful sunrise, there’s a calm, peaceful feeling to the verb. But if an army captain says to his squadron, “Wait here in the shadows until I give the signal, then attack,” their waiting will be a tense, alert, waiting-to-spring-into -action, type of waiting. In the Hebrew language this expectant waiting is the word, “Qavah.” (In total, the Hebrew language has 25 words for “Wait.” We have one).

“I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. WAIT (eager expectation) for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage. Yes, WAIT (watchful anticipation) for the Lord” (Psalm 27:13,14). Take note that this verb, Qavah, is not passive. We aren’t supposed to mentally check-out, or spiritually sleep, as we wait for Him to return, but we are to be looking and watching, expecting great things from Him, at any time.

To live expectantly is exactly how God wants us to live. As we watch prophetical events forming and converging throughout the whole world, it should fill us with great anticipation. The King is coming, and right behind Him you can hear the hoof beats of the four horses of the apocalypse. Are we hearing the pounding hooves in the distance of conquest, war, famine and death? We can (Revelation 6:1-8). Oh, but Jesus will come first: keep watching!

Friends, our struggles in this life are on notice - Help is on the way! The demonic realm that is ruthlessly wreaking havoc upon this earth, are on borrowed time. Our Deliverer is coming! Anticipate Him!

“Those that WAIT (looking with eager expectation) upon the Lord, shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).  May we be waiting for Him at the gate with our lamps burning, and our shoes on, because we are eagerly expecting Him, and “He that shall come, WILL come.” You can count on it.
