Every Day

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

When Satan deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden, the Lord stepped in that same day to save and restore them. To the Serpent the Lord said, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life…” (Genesis 3:14).

God declared Satan a defeated foe from the beginning. The words, “upon your belly you shall go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life,” are military words. Satan will experience defeat every day by God’s people – the very people he tried to murder.

We are encouraged that our obedience to God’s Word thwarts enemy plans and “bruises Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:19,20). To share the Gospel is to turn people from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God” (Acts 26:18).  And as we pray, we defeat the powers of darkness that withstand the kingdom of God (Ephesians 6:12,13).

That Satan is a defeated foe, and that we are “more than conquerors through Him who loved us,” are vital daily truths to grasp. Satan is not stronger, for “greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Satan is not wiser, for “we have the mind of Christ” through God’s Word (1 Corinthians 2:16). Nor is Satan fearless, for the Lord reminds us, “Submit yourselves to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 5:7).

“Now thanks be to God who always (at all times) leads us in triumph in Christ and makes manifest the fragrance of His knowledge through us in every place” (2 Corinthians 2:14).

This is what God calls victorious living. Maranatha.
