Everlasting Light

“In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shines (continuously) in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.” – John 1:1-5

In a Fire Department in California, a famous lightbulb called “The Centennial Light,” has been burning continuously for over 120 years. Although this bulb looks like others outwardly, it’s a one-of-a-kind handcrafted bulb, made of highly superior materials within.

Jesus may have “put on flesh” and looked like us, but He came to this world shining as: “The Word” who spoke all creation into existence, “God” incarnate, “Life,” and “Light.” Verse five is in the ‘present-continuous-tense’ meaning the Light CONTINUES to shine today. The world, in their love for darkness, may not grasp His love for them; they may reject His gracious gift of eternal life, but they can never overcome Him and snuff out His light – not then, not now.

While Jesus was on the Cross, “there was darkness over all the land from noon to 3-pm.” It was not the Father turning his face away as some claim, for the Bible clearly tells us He didn’t (Psalm 22:24), rather it was a taste of what’s coming to those who want a world without Him. This is why the eternal destiny of those rejecting Him is… “the blackness of darkness forever” (Jude 1:13).

Christmas reminds the world that Jesus is The Everlasting Light, and now is the time to trust Him, because “the darkness is passing, and the True Light, even now, continues to shine” (1 John 2:8).
