Doing What We Can

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

Mary, a recently forgiven disciple of Jesus – in a day when women were not allowed religious training – sat at Jesus’ feet and took in His words that He was going to the cross. She understood something the other disciples missed, and she understood that it was to put away her sins that Jesus was going to die.

One night, a few days before Passover, Jesus came for supper at Mary’s sister’s (Martha) home. As Jesus sat for dinner, she took a precious anointment of spikenard, worth one year’s wages, broke the box, and poured it on Jesus’ head. Judas led the accusation of, “Why this waste? This ointment might have been sold and given to the poor!”

But Jesus answered, “Leave her alone; why are you troubling her? She has performed a good work on Me, for the poor are with you always, and whenever you want, you may do them good: but Me you do not always have. She has done what she could: she has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial” (Mark 14:4-8).

Mary did what she could for Jesus, when she could. She knew it was her last opportunity to worship Him in person. But Jesus is not here for us to worship personally, so what can we do? The Bible has the answer… “Lord, You are my Lord: I cannot extend my goodness to You, but I can to the saints (holy people of God) that are in the earth, and to Your noble people, in whom is all my delight” (Psalm 16:2,3).

Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of these, My brethren, you have done to Me.” What great purpose and joy that gives us to show Christ we love Him, by doing “what we can” for His family. What opportunities are before you?
