Does It Matter?

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

A day is coming when everything we did in this life will be weighed on the Holy Scales of God’s judgment. Good intentions don’t have a weight: they were ghosts of good ideas, that were never given life. Procrastination will weigh heavy, as it was a duty placed in our care that we never did, or we did it half-hearted and late. But, great rewards await those that labored for that which was eternal. “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” What is eternal? Souls. And any part of winning that soul to Christ has its reward. Some sow, some water, some fertilize, some harvest, some encourage, some teach, some edify, some build up others faith, some show others how to love well, some are prayer warriors, some are called, like Paul, to rebuke sin, some correct wrong living, some redirect the lost… but everyone does something. Everyone’s works will be put on the Scale. “Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw-each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test each sort of work each one has done.” (1 Corinthians 3:12-13) May we each purpose to live each day for what matters. Much of what burdens us now will be irrelevant in Heaven, but imagine scanning the faces in Heaven and seeing so many lives you prayed over, you interceded for, you encouraged to follow the ways of God. Imagine the joy as each one is called forward as Jesus welcomes them into His everlasting Kingdom… the embraces, the tears of joy… we are all Home! These are the treasures worth living for. In comparison, nothing else matters.
