Do we live as though we are immortal? We should be. Our eternal life doesn’t start the second after our earthly bodies die, but the second we trusted Christ as our Savior. Death for the believer is merely a gateway from earthly life to heavenly life. Jesus taught on this… “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die. Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25, 26)
The believers and missionaries in the 1800’s understood this in a way we don’t. They signed up to go minister to the dying patients with various plagues, knowing that it could cost their life. But to them, they knew they were eternal and they went. Missionaries signing up to reach Africa with the Gospel were told that the average lifespan in this new land of malaria and dysentery would be about 5 years. They signed up anyways because they knew their lives were without end.
A preacher in the UK recently made the comment that comfort has become the God of our modern day; in churches as well as out of churches. Many rebuked him, but he spoke truth.
It’s not that we seek out risk or danger, but we need to learn to live with a holy boldness like one that is forever secure in Christ. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; nor shall the flame scorch you.” (Isaiah 43:2)
Friends, all the pain that this world throws at us cannot touch the immortal beings that God has made us into. We are safe FOREVER in Him. No fire, flood, disease, or crime can separate us from the love of God. We are eternally His. Do we believe this?
