“I am a debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the Gospel to you that are at Rome also.” – (Romans 1:14,15)
Historians tell us the Greeks called other cultures Barbarians. The Jews called other nations “Uncircumcised,” and still today the Arabs call those outside their religion “Infidels.” In stark contrast to the divisions of men, Paul went to Rome with a new message… “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God which leads to salvation to every one that believes...” – (Romans 1:16)
Paul was a debtor. His past was filled with hatred and prejudice. Despite being religious, popular, and powerful, he was headed for hell – until He met Christ. His transformation was evident… “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren (our fellow man). The one who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” (1 John 3:14,15).
The devil is working overtime today spreading hatred and discrimination. He knows his time is short. We look around our countries and say with Jesus, “An enemy has done this.” The hour is late and Jesus’ words to us are urgent… “Go out into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, the injured, the limping, and the blind… go into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that My house may be filled.” If ever there was a time to say “I am a debtor… I am ready to preach the Gospel” it is now.
