The disciple Philip, had a great message for his friend Nathanael... “We have found The One of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Joseph.” But Nathanael’s response was typical, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip’s response wasn’t angry, or defensive, but simply, “Come and see.”
When Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman at the well, He told her that He was the Messiah, the Giver of Real Water. “Whoever drinks of Me will never thirst again.” Overjoyed, that the Messiah would speak so tenderly and lovingly to her, she left her water jug and went back into town and said, “Come and see a Man who told me all that I ever did! Can this be The Christ?” (John 4:29)
Isn’t it a joy to our hearts to be loved by the One who is open to complete examination by his critics, fully able to handle all critique? “Come and I will show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” “Come unto Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” “Come let us reason together says the Lord...” He urges us to just come. The questions will be answered as needed, but just come... (Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 11:28, Isaiah 1:18)
Then there’s the invitation to “see Him.” “Taste and see that the Lord is good!” Jesus reminded us that “if we have seen Him, we have seen the Father.” To see Him is to see the purest of Love, the deepest essence of Peace, the greatest source of all Life, and the Root of our complete Joy. Oh, how the world needs to just Come and See. (Psalm 34:8, John 14:9)
Job said it well, when he longingly thought of that future date - the day he would see Jesus face to face. You can almost hear the big exhale at this precious thought, “Oh, how my heart yearns within me!” And truly, our hearts yearn to give our faith sight, to have our Lord reach out to us, open handed, with the precious words, “Welcome Home, dear one, Come and see!”
