Choosing Life

Devotional by Lisa Cataford

God made mankind a free moral agent. That’s part of being made in the image of God. We have the ability to think, reason, and choose. If we didn’t have free will, we would be robots – and there would be no such thing as love.

But possessing choice also means having the free will to disobey God – just as Adam and Eve did. When people ask, “If there is a God, why is there so much evil in the world?” The simple answer is because God gave mankind a free will, and all people have chosen things that God says are wrong. The Bible says, “By one man sin entered the world, and death because of sin. So death passed upon all mankind, because all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

God has offered us the cure for sin through the Cross in two ways. First God graciously forgives our sins when we acknowledge them through prayer, because Christ has paid for them. Then He sends His Holy Spirit to dwell within our hearts bringing the gift of righteousness – a new nature with both power and desire to do right…  “Those who receive abundant grace (forgiveness) and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life through Jesus Christ… for as sin has reigned leading to death, even so now might grace reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:17).

Those who blame God for the evil in the world, fail to acknowledge that He has sacrificially provided the Cure. God has set before mankind two roads with two eternal ends. He sent His Son to save us, His preachers to win us, His prophets to warn us, and His Word to assure us. But in the end, the choice to love Him back is ours alone.
