“Paul and Silas… went to Berea and went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore, many of them believed; also, of honorable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few!” – (Acts 17:10-12)
Although Paul and Silas were powerful preachers, teaching powerful truths by the power of the Spirit, the people of Berea didn’t just take their word for it. They checked it out for themselves so they could see it written and in context. Now they would know that Paul and Silas spoke truth, now they would know where to find that truth for themselves, and know that it was from God, not men – “Therefore, many of them believed.”
A “Where is it written?” mindset is vital in these days of deception and sensationalism. Jesus promised His disciples five wonderful truths through His Word. He would reveal Himself to us through His Word (John 14:21); that His Word would cleanse us and make us fruitful (John 15:3,4); His Spirit would use the Word to guide us into all truth (John 16:13,14); abiding in His Word is the key to answered prayer (John 15:7); and abiding in His Word is the nourishment that brings fulness of joy and peace (John 15:11;16:33).
Jesus used the term “It is written” abundantly. He asked the Pharisees, “Have you not read the Scriptures?” and He told the Sadducees, “You err, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.” He explained to His disciples that His suffering “was that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”
Delight in searching God’s Word and make it your final authority. You will forever be confident that you walk in truth.
