Be Ready

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

The Children of Israel were given specific instructions on the Passover meal; everything was representative of Christ and His perfect coming sacrifice for the world. A perfect roasted lamb, over a flame; bitter herbs, to remind them of their cruel bondage, and bread made without yeast, to remind them that sin (yeast) is done away with. (Exodus 12:8).

But then the instructions turn toward the mental and spiritual preparation…  “This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste. This is the Lord’s Passover.” (Exodus 12:11)

Are we ready? Do we eat with expectation that this could be our last meal before He comes? Is our cloak tucked into our belt? A sign that we are soon to be vacating the premises. Are our shoes, (representing the readiness of the gospel), on? Is our staff, (representing a soon journey, marked by the authority, power and discipline of the Word), held tight?

Are we as aware as we should be of this late hour? Are we eating in haste, eager to go meet our Master? Let us make sure our oil lamps are filled and we are waiting at the gate. “Blessed are those servants, whom the Master finds WATCHING when He comes.” (Luke 12:37)

Be ready…
