The Bible likens “hope” to a climbing rope – the scarlet rope Rahab let the spies down the wall with (Joshua 2:18). She tied that rope outside her window as a sign of hope (certainty) that she was ready to be rescued from Jericho’s coming destruction.
Every climber knows you’re only as secure as the strength and anchor of your rope. Christ alone, who cannot lie or die, gives us both… “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure (secure) and steadfast (stable and trustworthy), and which enters into that (area) within the veil (Heaven, the true Holy of Holies) …” (Hebrews 6:19).
But the wicked trust in themselves to secure their future. What they hope to attain through lies, murder, deception, theft, and obstruction, will end in their destruction. They have been warned… “the mouth of those speaking lies shall be stopped” (Psalm 63:11). Every murder will be exposed… “the earth shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain" (Isaiah 26:21). All deception will be revealed… “There is nothing secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither is there anything hidden, that shall not be made known and become public" (Luke 8:17).
All theft will be restored… “After this, I will return and build again the Tabernacle of David” (Acts 15:16), and all obstruction of truth and justice removed… “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it” (Isaiah 40:4,5).
We look around us today and grieve at the depth of wickedness of our world, but our hope is anchored in the King of Righteousness, seated on a throne of Holiness, who is Omniscient, Omnipotent, and Omnipresent, and who changes never. And He has said, “The hope of the righteous shall be gladness, but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.”
Be glad!
