It’s been said that the pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist is sure it will change for the better, but the realist adjusts his sails.
Spiritually, the same is true. We can grieve for the past, or longingly hope that our future joys outweigh the past’s pain, or we can glean from our past vital lessons that draw us closer to God and make us a blessing to those that are traveling that same difficult trail now. It’s so important that we are growing in a forward motion - especially now!
Jesus said it well, “No one who puts his hand to the plow but keeps looking back is fit for the Kingdom of God (Luke 9:62). The Apostle Paul said it this way, “Forgetting the things that are behind, and reaching for the things that lie before” (Philippians 3:13).
Why is looking back so wrong? Because it often draws our focus to a sweeter time that no longer exists. We can’t live in our past without robbing the present of value and purpose. Our present trials call us to face the headwinds with our eyes wide open.
Instead of looking back (longingly), let’s adjust our sails, plant our feet strongly on the Rock, and ask God to use us for His glory in these late hours. With faces to the wind, let’s pray for courage and strength. We have a voice for Truth, and we need to use it. May we use whatever energy we have to call people to Christ.
Time is short! But through it all, let’s do what Jesus said - let’s look up! For His great return is next on His calendar.
