A Vain Thing

“Why do the nations rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against Jehovah, and against His Messiah, saying, ‘Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.” – Psalm 2:1-3

Herod ‘the Great’ tried to stop the reign of Christ by killing all the baby boys of Bethlehem.  Later, Pilate and Herod Antipas tried to stop Him by crucifying Him. When they also tried to stop the spread of the Gospel after Jesus was risen, Peter quoted this passage from Psalm 2, saying… “For of a truth against Your holy Child Jesus, whom You have Anointed (Messiah), both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together… now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant to your servants, that with all boldness they may speak Your word” (Acts 4:25-29).  The Lord answered and the Kingdom grew.

For two thousand years the Gospel has gone around the globe defying every effort to stop it.  All the conniving by world leaders today to overthrow Christianity is nothing more than “a vain thing.” God has decreed that the Son He gave in love to die for us, is the One who shall reign forever: “Yet have I set My King upon My holy hill of Zion.”

“Be wise now therefore, O ye kings; be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son (pledge loving allegiance), lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled in a little while. Blessed are all they who put their trust in Him.”

Our most certain joy this happy season is to remember: The King is coming.
