A Turning Point

Devotional by Cheryl Hall-Laos

The life of an unbeliever is forever changed when they get to the end of themselves and call out to Christ to save them. Nothing from this point forward is the same. The Holy Spirit comes to live within them, convicting them of sin, changing their habits, their language, and their lifestyle. They have a “hunger for the pure milk of the Word that they may grow thereby.” It’s a turning point.

The Believer that has walked with God for a long time also has turning points. These are moments in their walk marked by implicit obedience. Not just simple obedience to small tasks, but a seasoned obedience that can be entrusted to walk out a life’s calling before the Lord.

Noah was about 500 years old when he obeyed God’s call to build the ark. He worked faithfully for about 100 years fulfilling what God had asked before the rain drops began to fall. We have to wonder how many people God could entrust with a 100-year plan without doubt and frustration winning out and walking away?

Moses was an old man of 80 years when God asked him to go lead the Children of Israel to freedom. How many occasions to obey God were given to him to prove his trustworthiness for this task? He had heard the voice of God and it changed everything. This moment of accepting the call to obey Him was the very reason for which he was born.

The list goes on from Daniel who obeyed God over the evil rulers of his day, to Esther who rose to her position as Queen in obedience to (her Uncle) and ultimately God, in order that she could save an entire nation. Joseph did the same, and the disciples each obeyed the Lord at the cost of their lives, but they changed the entire world!

Friends, we are in enemy territory with godless leadership. God is calling many of His children to rise up and speak in new, bold ways. Are we trustworthy with His message? Are we strong enough to not let discouragement dissuade us? Are we willing to be uncomfortable for His purposes? “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice and to heed(submit) to Him is better than the offering of the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)

May we recognize these turning points that give our lives meaning for eternity, and step into them with Divine delight. He is worthy!
